Agency’s flooding service is extended
Wednesday 10th March 2010, 11:54AM GMT.
Hundreds more homes and businesses in Shropshire at risk from flooding will receive free warnings from today.
The Environment Agency is extending its service to cover about 600 more properties in the county.
The service is offered to at-risk properties with a landline and, if everybody takes up the offer for free flood alerts, it will mean about 1,300 properties in the county will be covered.
Residents and businesses near the River Severn in Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth and Ironbridge are among those who have suffered flooding problems.
One of the most severe incidents happened in the autumn of 2000 when the worst flooding for over 50 years devastated the length of the River Severn, hitting Shrewsbury badly.
The town was flooded three times in six weeks. As a result, the drive to provide flood alleviation schemes for the town was accelerated with work completed at the end of 2003.
The EA is now sending letters to homes and firms which are to be signed up. Subscribers can choose to opt out of the service but the agency is urging everyone to check its website for more information about preparing for the risk of flooding.
Across the Midlands, about 45,000 more homes and businesses will receive flood warnings.
