Young gardeners wait for the warmer days

Star Gardens logoYoungsters at a Telford & Wrekin school are waiting for the frosts to end before they improve their vegetable garden.

Pupils at Redhill Primary School, in Priorslee, are ready to start planting vegetables and fruit as part of the Shropshire Star’s Star Gardens campaign.

However, deputy headteacher Mandy Ward said they were waiting until Jack Frost had disappeared for another year, because green shoots could be killed off by harsh, cold mornings. She said: “The Gardening Club is waiting for our bulbs to emerge after planting them last season.

“We have a new greenhouse being erected, acquired with Morrison vouchers as part of the ‘Let’s Grow’ scheme, and we will start growing seeds for vegetables and plants which we will plant out when it’s slightly warmer.”

Mrs Ward added that children were presently looking at all aspects of gardening, including environmental issues.

She said: “We have a sensory garden committee comprising pupils, teachers and community members, who are working on their plans. They are finding out about funding for a sensory garden, which would be a place for reflection, quiet times, creative writing and a quiet space for children to work in.”

Mrs Ward added the school was seeking ideas for grants so that it could enable wheelchair access to its garden. She said: “This will be on a piece of land which is currently not accessible for children.”

Residents or gardening experts willing to help Redhill youngsters can contact the school.
