Midfielder Murray will ‘play anywhere’

paul-murrayMidfielder Paul Murray insists he will play anywhere in order to be involved in Shrewsbury Town’s push for promotion from League Two.

The 33-year-old filled in for the suspended Dean Holden at right-back in Saturday’s disappointing 3-0 defeat at Grimsby Town.

He had last appeared in the televised draw at Rotherham before being left out again as Shrewsbury won a crunch clash at home to Bournemouth at the end of last month.

And he is eager to try and help Town get back to winning ways after the mauling by the Mariners, insisting he can adapt to whatever job the manager asks of him.

“I played at Rotherham and was disappointed not to keep my place,” said Murray. “I thought I did well and it was a little bit harsh to be left out in the next game.

“But I continued to work hard and train properly, and I got another opportunity at Grimsby – even if it was at right-back rather than my usual position.

“The manager knows I can play the defensive positions and I think he wanted to go with a bit of experience for that game.

“It didn’t pan out as we wanted, but I was still pleased to be out there and get another appearance.

“I played at right and left-back when I was 17 or 18 at Carlisle under Mick Wadsworth. He wanted me to learn the defensive side of the game, so it’s something I know I can do.”

The former Carlisle, QPR and Oldham man also remains adamant that Shrewsbury can go on to book a place in the play-offs – and maybe go one step further.

“You look at Chesterfield, who have won seven of their last eight, and that’s the kind of run we need to cement our play-off place and maybe even go for the automatic places,” added Murray.

“There are plenty of teams who are still looking at that third place as the target and it’s a very tight division.”
