Letter: Does MP support rail competition?
Tuesday 9th March 2010, 7:59AM GMT.
Letter: Re a quote from our MP on April 10, 2009 in response to a Virgin Trains proposal for routes to London from Shrewsbury, being shelved. Daniel Kawczynski, MP for Shrewsbury, said it was “very important” WSMR was supported, but he believed in “open competition”.
Quote from our MP on March 3, 2010 in response to refusal of routes to London from Shrewsbury on Arriva Trains Wales. Daniel Kawczynski, MP for Shrewsbury, said he was “delighted” with the decision. “I’m absolutely thrilled. All of the Shropshire MP’s worked very well together to lobby the regulator to prevent Arriva having this service”.
Didn’t see a great deal of input from Daniel in the press beforehand. Does he support “open competition” or not? Running with the hare and the hounds, or jumping on the bandwagon seems to be a common theme in the letters pages these days.

The problem with the strict right wing free market stance espoused by Lawrence Hatfield is that the sharks will always triumph over the other fish.

Clearly Mr Kawczynski supports the German state-owned WMSR to a proper British company like Arriva.

… or maybe he just supports rail services that:
- are clean
- are punctual
- have a high quality of customer service
- are comfortable
- are not overcrowded cattle trucks
none of which, alas, apply to Arriva.

The Wrexham and Shropshire service to London, run by Deutsche Bahn, will probably not be competing with Arriva Trains for long. Deutsche Bahn, German government owned railways, has put a bid in to purchase the whole of Arriva’s worldwide operations. Maybe we will in the future be able to catch a train to Berlin from Mid Wales or Shropshire?
