This week’s Pictures from the Past
Monday 8th March 2010, 9:43AM GMT.

A young soldier – or soldiers – far from home sent this postcard showing the “Naafi Club, Oswestry” in either 1950 or 1951 (the franking mark is difficult to read).
The message was: “Dear Tony, Many thanks for your cards. You seem to be quite well off and to have a good holiday. Life in the army is pretty hard with plenty of square bashing and polishing. The food is rather poor, nothing like home. Please do not forget to join the soccer team and Christchurch (the next word is unreadable). Well that’s all for now Tony, best wishes to all, new soldiers (next word unreadable) David & Chris.”
It was posted to T. Stewart Esq, 503A Croydon Road, Beckenham, Kent.

Oswestry Co-op. That looks like the Traffic lights in Oswestry with what is now the Coach and Dogs and a fabric store in the background. The Co-op van is parked in Morda Road. Upper Brook Street would be to the left and Lower Brook Street to the right.

I believe the bridge at Sutton road junction was built by Italian prisoner’s of war, and the support leg on the right of the photo was an inch short of touching the bridge, so it was in fact doing nothing.
