Shropshire screenwriter Jesse Armstrong admitted he flew to Hollywood more in hope than in expectation as he looked to cap an award-winning start to the year by striking gold at the Oscars.

The Oswestry-born writer, who is a former Shropshire Star paperboy, was one of several Brits hoping to walk away with an Academy Award.

He and his three co-writers were nominated in the adapted screenplay section for their work on biting political satire, In The Loop.

The screenplay earned them a  London Evening Standard Film Award, but they missed out on the Bafta earlier this month to the George Clooney drama, Up In The Air.

The former Marches school pupil, who also co-wrote acclaimed TV series Peep Show, said he wasn’t expecting to win the Oscar, but was flying out to the Los Angeles ceremony with his wife “just to see what it’s all about”.

Before the ceremony Armstrong wrote on his Twitter page: “Off to America to the Oscars. In America. And Certain Victory!

But sadly it was not to be. Instead, Jesse and his colleagues lost out to Geoffrey Fletcher for his screenplay “Precious”.
