Music festival hailed a success

Gobowen Primary School recorder group took part in this year's Youth Music Festival
Hundreds of young musicians and singers have descended on Oswestry for the youth music festival.
But such is the success of the annual event that organisers say they desperately need more volunteers to help at next year’s event.
The festival has been running in Oswestry for more than 30 years, overseen by Oswestry Town Council.
This year the four-day event is being held at two venues – the town’s Christ Church and nearby Methodist Church.
Thursday saw the launch of the festival with competitions for woodwind and recorder players and percussionists as well as the vocal solo competitions. Winners of some of the competitions compete for the winners’ trophies at the concert finale at Christ Church tomorrow afternoon.
The Young Music Festival chairman, Councillor Martin Bennett, said competitors had come from across the Oswestry area, north Shropshire and North Wales.
“I think we have become victims of our own success,” he said. “We will need to appeal for more voluntary help for next year’s festival and we will be looking for a co-ordinator.”
He urged people to go along to Sunday’s free concert at 2pm.
