Wrekin walk every day of month raises charity cash

Friday 5th March 2010, 9:48AM GMT.

A man who climbed The Wrekin every day for a month on his way to work has raised hundreds of pounds for charity.

David Smith, of Coleham, near Shrewsbury, woke at 6am every day to do the walk en route to work in Telford.

Mr Smith, 47, who is a computer operator, raised more than £600 for the Helping Haiti appeal, which he said he is “delighted” with.

He raised £629 for the appeal and people can still add to the total by visiting www.justgiving.com/wrekinchallenge

He said: “Mission accomplished. I was joined for my final ascent by my dad and three friends.

“Despite terrible forecasts, the weather was fine and visibility was good. I have been really lucky with the weather this month and it could certainly have been a lot worse.

“Thanks very much for everyone who has donated and offered support and encouragement in so many ways.”

David said he was moved to take action by the scenes of devastation following the earthquake in Haiti, which has claimed the lives of more than 240,000 people.

He believes that outside help is desperately needed to stop many more deaths from hunger and disease.

Funds donated via David’s web page are going to the Disasters Emergency Committee, who will allocate it to their Haiti appeal.

“I have had quite a lot of support from other people, mainly from work, who came and walked with me in the mornings,” he said.

He added: “It certainly helped me get out of bed knowing that there will be someone else making the effort.”
