A Shropshire woman has taken on supermarket giant Tesco in a David and Goliath battle over plans for a “monstrous” wind turbine – and won.

Pat Hansen wrote to the supermarket’s chief executive after it won an appeal to put up a 10-metre micro wind turbine at its store in Station Drive in Ludlow.

She urged chief executive Sir Terry Leahy to ditch the proposal for the turbine at the store, suggesting there were plenty of other ways for the supermarket giant to be environmentally green.

And today Mrs Hansen heard that, with backing from Ludlow’s MP Philip Dunne, bosses at Tesco have taken her advice and abandoned plans for the turbine in the supermarket car park.

Tesco today said it was a shame the issue had caused so much controversy and thanked Mrs Hansen for her suggestions.

Mrs Hansen, from Ludlow, said: “This is great news. I am absolutely de-lighted. With a little help from Philip Dunne we have managed to get Tesco to drop the plan for a wind turbine.”

She said she wished people in the town would stand up to battle issues of concern in the area.

“People are so apathetic about it, they never do write letters,” she said.

Mrs Hansen had previously accused the supermarket giant of “green wash” claiming that Tesco merely wanted to be seen to be “doing the right thing”.

In her letter to bosses she said by putting the wind turbine up the firm was “ignoring local feelings, and demonstrating that yet again big business is trampling on the individual”.

Tesco’s corporate affairs manager Tony Fletcher today said: “It is a shame that it caused so much controversy. Wind turbines are not the only solution, it is just part of a contribution.”
