Spandau star in Quarry concert
Friday 5th March 2010, 9:00AM GMT.

Eighties stars Tony Hadley and Rick Astley will be topping the bill at this year’s Shrewsbury Quarry concert.
Spandau Ballet singer Hadley will be joined by Astley, ABC and Go West for the concert, which will form part of the Summer Sessions at the Quarry on July 9 and 10.
Promoters IML Concerts said the artists would be playing songs from their “massive repertoire” of hit records and for the first time will also perform specially chosen duets and collaborations.
More acts will be announced nearer the event.
Keith Louch, director of IML Concerts, said they were expecting a big rush for tickets this year.
He said: “It’s a real pleasure to bring the Summer Sessions back to Shrewsbury, we are delighted to be working with such a great line-up of stars.
“The evening will feature a unique programme including duets and collaborations from the artists – it is going to be a tremendous show and is sure to get the audience singing and dancing along as it has done in past years.”
Advance tickets cost £32.50 with a discount for groups of more than 10 adults of 10 per cent when booked through IML Concerts. Event manager Chris Bailey said: “Once again it will be a picnic-style concert.
“We have introduced special tickets for children under 16 at £15 with entry for the under fives absolutely free.”

Great News…
Lets hope the council doomers don’t spoil this one!

let’s hope he’s not to noisy we wouldn’t want to disturb the local town residents association

Excellent news, more 80′s throw backs. I thought they’d never top Carol Decker last year but well done everybody you’ve surpassed yourselves.
Who is lined up for 2011? Is it Timmy Mallet, The Thompson Twins, or maybe even Yazz? My money is on Sonia.

A quick squint at the IML Concerts website confirms that the line up is: Tony Hadley, Rick Astley, ABC, and Go West.
For £33 a ticket … you’re joking right?
Why is it always 80′s bands? Are the planners stuck in a Life On Mars sort of time warp or do they just really love Grange Hill and want to get back to the glory days?

Same old same old I am afraid! A change of era would be good! I guess no really current acts are attracted to the Quarry because of the noise restrictions!

It’s aimed at the usual ageing hang on to your youth at any cost fold out chair sauvignon slappers who’ll tumble out squiffy and grinning happy to have handed over a wedge of their lovely disposable. I’m more than eligible by age but I still retain some interest in new music AND I pay my council tax so nothing doing here for me either. What a dismal load of old flannel this line-up is once again.

Great news – the last few years concerts have been excellent (even with the rain!)
Fingers tightly crossed that Bananarama & Toyah return. And even more tightly crossed that Carol Decker stays away.

I’d quite like to sample some of this new fangled ‘modern’ music i’ve been hearing so much talk about.

For those with a taste for top class world music – Afro Celt will be headlining the Shrewsbury Folk Festival this year. Now that is exciting.

Always knew Shrewsbury was a backwater, but just discovering the 80′s!!!!! Expect a glue sniffing epidemic to hit Ditherington over the summer months.

You don’t have to go you know!

I know we don’t have to go Mark but as it is one of the few events in Shrewsbury year we actually would like to go (have done in the past) but it needs to be something fresh. One-fifth of Spandau Ballet is not enough to attract people!

For those lucky enough to be right by the stage you might actually hear the music. Everyone else – take a good book.

I suspect if this was advertised as Spandau Ballet, the hoi-polloi would have raised no objections as they’d probably expect somebody in a tutu and leotard to grace the stage….

Theres’ no point putting any modern music on in Shrewsbury because any 20 something that has any form of taste/modern culture about them will leave the town at the earliest possible moment leaving behind them the rest of the population who still think Kajagoogoo are cool, and whine about Telford..

oooh time for some personal reflection – am I really ‘an ageing hang on to your youth at any cost fold out chair sauvignon slappers who’ll tumble out squiffy and grinning happy to have handed over a wedge of their lovely disposable’ ??
YES !! I probably am, but then life’s too short to sit at home listening to radio 4 on a wind up radio sipping ovaltine isn’t it?

May I , on behalf of IML Concerts, respond to some of the comments above.
Sound: Following extensive discussions with the Council over the noise issues, we are confident that in 2010 the sound levels will be appropriate for the July 9 show.
Artists: Yes, these are 80′s artists and in both 2008 and 2009 this genre artist pulled maximum crowds at the Quarry. For those who question the line-up, I can confirm that we will be presenting another show on Saturday 10 July which will be very diffferent to the 80′s artists. In past years we have presented Jools Holland, Katie Melua, Sugababes, Lemar & Beverley Knight, Will Young, Lesley Garrett, all of which represent different styles to the 80′s.
Tickets: price is £32.50 – and we have further Friday night artists to announce so the final line-up will be more than the four artists so far announced.
IML continually searches for a balance of acts for our outdoor shows around the UK but cannot just contract anyone we wish – not all bands want to perform outdoors, some are contracted to the indoor arena circuit, some are recording new albums or overseas and not available for summer gigs, others are already performing within a 50-mile radius and cannot contractually take another gig, others would simply not pull in a large enough crowd to warrant presenting them.
We welcome all comments about the shows we present at The Quarry, indeed around the country, and I hope that the above might answer a few of the queries raised from your correspondents.

Chris Bailey
