Gunnell survives fightback
Friday 5th March 2010, 10:14AM GMT.
Shropshire snooker ace Adrian Gunnell is through to the final round of qualifying for a place at the World Championships after late night drama against Joe Delaney.
The Telford potter looked to be cruising to an easy victory as he opened up an 8-0 lead at the Sheffield Institute of Sport yesterday afternoon – making breaks of 128 and 78.
But Delaney took the last frame of the session and then the first four last night to get back in contention.
Gunnell eventually came through 10-7 to set up a meeting with six times world champion Steve Davis on Sunday, finishing the match at 12.45am.
He clinched the victory in style, overturning a 57-point deficit with a classy break of 64 under extreme pressure.
“I nearly collapsed when I rolled the final pink in,” Gunnell revealed. “It was the worst night of my life in a match, it was horrible.
“I’m like Jekyll and Hyde. I’m confident of beating anyone when the proper me turns up.
“But every now and again the ugly me turns up instead – and that was certainly the case in the second session last night.”
