Daly on a winner – but no runners at Festival

Friday 5th March 2010, 11:12AM GMT.

Shropshire’s top jumps trainer Henry Daly will not have any runners at the Cheltenham Festival – but that has not stopped him churning out the winners over the last two days.

Following hard on the hoof prints of Bangor bumper winner Inga Bird , Pickamus landed Ludlow’s 2m 4f Novices Chase yesterday in good style.

Going off the 4-1 shot, Pickamus made every yard of the running to see off his rivals and take the cash by four lengths.

Daly said: “The beauty about this horse is that you can run him over two miles and drop him in or go for two and half miles and let him make his own running.

“He has always loved jumping fences, he really takes a look at them and measures them.”

Daly virtually ruled out all of his entries for the Festival at Ludlow yesterday as not being able to get a run.

He said: “There is no point in going there if you don’t think you have a chance.”

He did have six horses entered – including John Smith’s Grand National hope Possol – but now looks certain to have a blank Festival. Possol goes to Doncaster tomorrow for the Grimthorpe Chase and then he will prepared for the National at Aintree.

Of Inga Bird, Daly said: “He will make a lovely big chaser. Anything he does in bumpers and over hurdles will be a bonus.”
