MPs are told of ‘sardine express’

Thursday 4th March 2010, 11:04AM GMT.

pritchardMP Mark Pritchard has taken the saga of Shropshire’s “sardine express” to Parliament.

The Wrekin MP tackled Transport Minister Sadiq Khan at the Commons Transport Select Committee yesterday.

He wants a limit on the number of passengers in carriages after dubbing the Arriva Trains Wales Shrewsbury to Birmingham International commuter service the “sardine express” because of the overcrowding.

Train operators have no legal obligation to limit passengers, unlike plane and bus companies.

Mr Pritchard said: “Packing in commuters on trains like sardines is both uncomfortable and dangerous.

“In an emergency overcrowding would slow down evacuation and could add to injuries and fatalities.

“Ministers have a responsibility to review the inadequacy of the law and take action to remedy the situation in collaboration with train operators.”

I USED THIS SERVICE BOTH TUESDAY TO COME FROM BIRMINGHAM AFTER A DAYS SHOPPING AND WEDNESDAY RETURNING TO SHREWSBURY FROM A THEATRE TRIP IN WOLVERHAMPTON, ONLY TWO CARRIAGES ON BOTH JOURNEYS, AN APOLOGY WAS MADE ON EACH JOURNEY AND A DIFFERENT EXCUSE WAS MADE EACH DAY. STOOD UP ON BOTH JOURNEYS, WHAT ARE THE HEALTH AND SAFETY RULES???

Careful of using the health and safety argument. any other time everyone will shout ‘It’s health and safety gone mad!’ but when we are put out its ‘what about health and safety’ make up your minds please.
i saw the video that was taken on the train and frankly it should not have been published as that train looked absolutly roomy compared to say a tube train and did not help the case at all.
