Tesco bosses reveal 800 applied for 150 jobs
Wednesday 3rd March 2010, 10:28AM GMT.
The impact of the recession was brought into sharp focus today with bosses of a new Telford supermarket revealing more than 800 people applied for just 150 jobs at the store.
Bosses of the new Tesco in Madeley described the number of applications as “overwhelming” with five people fighting it out for each job.
Store manager Chris Green today said: “In this time of economic uncertainty it is great that we are able to create jobs and help get people back into work.
“The quality of applicants was fantastic and I am delighted with my new team.”
He added the recruitment process was now over and staff were currently preparing for the launch of the store this month.
“All new recruits are currently on their company induction,” he said.
“They will then go on a basic training programme before being given training specific to their department to ensure that they are fully trained prior to the official opening,” he added.
The store recruited staff through Job Centre Plus and people who were interested were directed to the Tesco recruitment website.
In addition to the 150 positions, 50 staff have been transferred from the temporary Tesco store in Madeley to work at the new Park Avenue store.
The superstore is due to open at 8am on March 22. The official opening ceremony will take place at 10am, when a £1,000 donation will be presented to a local charity. The store will be open from 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

A bit of a sensationalist headline. What we dont know is how many of those 800 applicants were already unemployed, or just looking for a change of employer.
5-1 ratio for job advertised as widely as Tesco did is not really that high

Big up for Tesco, 150 jobs in Madeley makes them easily the biggest employer in Madeley. And they’ve totally transformed the town centre for the better..

What a joy it will be shopping at this store with only the creme de la creme working there,Im willing to bet that all shelves will always be stocked without the need to hinder shoppers at peak times, the customer services team(if required in a perfect store)will be bending over backwards to help joe public and of course all tills will be manned meaning no waiting to pay for your goods.Cannot wait to see this store in operation.

I wonder how many are part time?

I agree with Spencer, Madeley is far better now. It shows the lengths some supermarket companies are willing to go to improve local areas.

@ Zola25, You have two choices, you either shop there or you don’t, and if it means one less person in the queue whining about the lack of a red carpet then thats fine by me..but at least theres’ a choice now..

Hopeful that out of the 850 applicants, they can get some decent staff. Love the new store, and some of the ladies on the till are lovely, but some right miserable staff in there
Oh, and hopefully the new till staff will remember that tesco offer green clubcard points – they always forget

Advertise a single job and you’ll hope to receive more than 5 applicants….so 800 applicants for 150 jobs is pretty reasonable.

It IS good to see Madeley with a High Street going through it like it used to be, BUT it is dominated too much by the Tesco storefront.
