Smith so pleased, but it’s ‘galling’

AFC Telford United sub Sean Evans scores a goal
Boss Rob Smith is urging Telford United to deliver when it matters after thrashing Premier League Wolves in a hastily-arranged friendly, writes CHRIS HUDSON.
The Bucks have struggled to show any consistency in the Blue Square North this season, and remain on the fringes of the play-off race.
But they showed their potential as they beat a strong Wolves side 4-0 at the New Bucks Head last night in a game organised after scheduled league opponents Farsley Celtic lurched closer to liquidation.
Danny Carey-Bertram opened the scoring before substitutes Sean Evans and Andy Brown (2) got in on the act.
And Smith admitted: “It makes it worse in many ways, because we know that’s what we’re capable of.”
“For some reason we haven’t performed this season and it is frustrating, but we can take some confidence from that because there were a lot of positives.
“Ryan Young’s been having a bad time but he had a superb performance, and Sean Evans came on and showed why we actually signed him. In the midfield Kevin O’Connor was tremendous as well.
“I know the talent we’ve got and we shouldn’t be in the position we are in. It’s so, so galling.
“But there’s no point just talking about it and we have to do it on a regular basis – starting with Solihull on Saturday.”
Meanwhile, chairman Lee Carter was delighted to have attracted a crowd of 817 after arranging the game at less than six hours’ notice.
And he publicly praised Wolves for agreeing to send a side after their own reserve game away to Portsmouth had been postponed.
“It was a great success,” he said. “It was good from a financial point of view, but it also fulfiled our commitment to season ticket holders to host 21 home games.
“All credit to Wolves. They’re a great football club and we can’t thank them enough for their support.”
