Shrewsbury Town will roll back the years next season by reverting to the club’s first ever playing strip to mark the club’s 125th anniversary.

Players will be donning the type of kit the Shrews wore in 1888 – the year of the club’s first recorded strip. The club was formed two years earlier.

The new home kit will feature a plain blue shirt, white shorts and blue socks, meaning the famous amber colours popular during Town’s glory days of the late 1970s and early 1980s will be gone for the season.

Fans will then be able to vote for another new kit for the 2011/12 season from three or four designs.

Jon Harris, the club’s general manager, said: “It is a very exciting time for the football club and we are looking forward to marking the 125th anniversary.

“As part of this we thought we would go back to our roots by playing in a replica of the very first kit we played in.

“This is a blue and white strip which was used in 1886 so will feature no amber, but we want to assure fans that this does not mean the end of amber being featured in the future.”

The club said it felt the new kit was the best way to honour the emergence of Shrewsbury Town as a professional football club and will be the start of many celebrations.

The shirt is expected to be of minimal design and it is not yet clear whether it will feature a sponsorship logo.

If it is to be the Kit from 1888 it is more than likely to be Blue and White Quarters on the shirt, with white shorts and blue socks. There is lots of debate on the Blue and Amber (STFC supporters site) message board about this very subject. Most fans are in favour of Blue and White for the anniversary season, but, as is always the case, it depends upon which kit style and colour, the club chooses
