Terry Dunfield of Shrewsbury Town celebrates after scoring to make it 1-0 with Dean Holden of Shrewsbury Town
The injury to Craig Disley is a big blow for Town, but results on the pitch continue to give fans much to be positive about, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.
When Simpson snapped up Disley from Bristol Rovers in the summer he came with a big reputation as a creative and goalscoring midfielder and he was my tip to be one of the players of the season.
But with three months of the season still to be played, his campaign could already be over after only just getting himself fit following a different injury.
Simpson has decided not to bolster his squad with a loan signing to replace Disley which is all well and good unless we lose another midfielder through injury.
His absence certainly didn’t seem to have an effect on the rest of the players on Saturday as we picked up an impressive 1-0 win against high-flying Bournemouth at the Prostar.
Bournemouth may have been missing a lot of players through injury, but Town once again proved they can compete against the best in the division thanks to a rare goal from Dunfield and a lively performance from new signing Cureton.
Town’s recent run of form has been down to players returning from injury and other players hitting form at the same time. Another key reason has been the performance of the defence since Christmas, in particular the goalkeeper.
Town have had problems with goalkeepers in the last couple of seasons through injury and form. But in on-loan David Button they have found a confident young goalkeeper who has been a revelation and has given confidence to the players in front of him.
The chances of us keeping such a talent beyond the end of the season might be slim, but if we can get continue to get the best out of him during his remaining time with the club, then we will be a hard team to beat and we will have a great chance of getting promotion.
My recent concerns that Town’s home attendances have dropped below 5,000 appear to be easing, if the last two games are anything to go by. Is this because they have been against a local and promotion rival or is it because the fans belief we can get promoted is growing?
Following a difficult run of games, which has seen us face three of the top five, our next game SHOULD BE more straightforward as we travel to second from bottom Grimsby.
Grimsby have one of the worst goalscoring records in the division and have only won three league games all season. However, it was only in December when Town approached the game against the same opposition with much optimism and ended up struggling to a 0-0 draw.
