Ellie Jones, 10, all dressed up for St David's Day.
St David’s Day was being celebrated across Mid Wales today with events in schools and community organisations.
Welshpool Town Hall was the centre of the market town’s celebrations today with a coffee morning. Harpist Ellie Jones, 10, provided Welsh music for visitors and there was entertainment provided by Oldford School.
Ellie and others arrived in traditional Welsh costume and the Welsh theme conditions with delicious Welsh cakes on offer.
The youngster, a pupil at Buttington Trewern School, has played her harp at St David’s Day events for the past three years.
She won the 2009 music festival in Welshpool and was invited to take part in the coffee morning by Welshpool town clerk Robert Robinson. Ex-pats in Shropshire were also joining in the celebrations.
Shrewsbury Welsh Society held a St David’s Day concert at Theatre Severn recently, featuring the Hogia’r Ddwylan male voice choir, 4Girls with 4Harps and Welsh soprano Adele O’Neill. The event raised money for the society’s nominated charity – the Shrewsbury Music Therapy Trust Fund.
And Salop Leisure was flying the Welsh flag, handing out daffodils to customers and serving up traditional Welsh dishes as well as promoting Mid Wales holidays and attractions at its headquarters off the Shrewsbury bypass at Emstrey Island.
