Students film set for cinema showing

cinema-theatre-seatsA Shropshire cinema is to premiere a film about the Red Cross made by students from Shrewsbury College and the British Youth Film Academy.

The 80-minute documentary will be shown next Thursday at Cineworld, in Shrewsbury.

It follows a year in the life of the International Red Cross as seen through the eyes and lenses of the students who have formed a close relationship with the worldwide humanitarian body in recent years.

Travel and tourism lecturer Phil Castle, whose students were involved in making the film, said: “Our students wanted to do something to get the message out to the wider world about what a remarkable organisation the Red Cross is and a documentary following its work through every month of the year seemed the best idea.

“They were the driving force behind the project but the BYFA really made the production of a highly professional film possible, doing much of the filming and all the post-production work, and we were also assisted by 12 performing arts students whose help was invaluable,” he added.

A group of the students attended the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Red Cross in Italy last year and Mr Castle said it was hoped the link between the college and the Red Cross would grow stronger in the future.

The students have now been nominated for the Humanitarian Citizen of the Year award.

Cineworld is making a 200-seat cinema available for the premiere, which is by invitation only.
