Burton’s last day aim

Thursday 25th February 2010, 6:08PM GMT.

Richard BurtonRichard Burton, Shropshire’s three-times national point-to-point champion jockey, will be forced to sit out part of the biggest week of the jumps racing calendar.

Burton will miss the Wednesday and Thursday of next month’s Cheltenham Festival as he concludes a 12-day suspension.

But his ban will finish in time for him to attempt to win back-to-back Foxhunter Chase’s on the Friday after teaming up with Cappa Bleu, trained by Hadnall’s Sheila Crow, to taste glory in 2009.

“It’s a big disappointment to miss the Wednesday and the Thursday because I had rides in the Kim Muir Chase and the four mile National Hunt Chase,” said Burton.

“Hopefully I can get a good ride in the Foxhunter’s because winning that again would certainly make up for missing the previous two days.”

Burton was handed the suspension after being beaten by 35 lengths aboard Oscar D’Angron at Leicester last week.

Following a lengthy enquiry, the stewards ruled he had not made “reasonable and permissible measures to reach his best possible finishing position”.

Burton did consider the possibility of an appeal, but decided against it.

The ban can only fall on days when amateur riders’ races are scheduled, ruling out day one of the Festival on Tuesday, March 16.
