Support gained for tennis proposal

Councillors have backed proposals for a £2.2 million tennis centre in Telford which would open in a year.
Work will start on the new development next to Oakengates Leisure Centre this August if planners also support the proposals at a future meeting.
Last night Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet backed the plans for the indoor tennis centre in Wrockwardine Wood.
A bid is being made for funding from the Lawn Tennis Association for help to pay for the new facility, which is planned to open in March 2011.
Councillor Stephen Burrell said the centre was fundamental to the regener- ation of the area and he welcomed the plans.
Councillor Liz Clare welcomed the centre saying it would complement the relocation of the Sutherland School. She said: “The only thing is the people of Oakengates will say this is not in Oakengates, it is two miles away from Oakengates.”
But Councillor Sean Kelly said the facility was within the parish boundaries of Oakengates.
The application is for four indoor tennis courts, four all-weather outdoor courts and 10m-high floodlights.
The tennis centre had been planned for Hadley Learning Community but the plans were pulled because of “planning and technical issues”.
The new tennis centre is part of a bid by the council to build new sports facilities at six separate sites across Telford.
