Call for action over state of town toilets

A Shropshire woman has demanded something is done to improve the state of a block of public toilets.

Mavis Jakeway, of Shrewsbury, said that she had been desperate to use a toilet while shopping in Shrewsbury on Saturday and had been close to the Raven Meadows toilets, but she said that was left stunned by the smell coming from inside the toilets and the conditions inside.

“I was out shopping with some family members and desperately needed to use a toilet and as I was close to the bus station decided to venture to the Raven Meadows toilets,” she said.

“But as I got closer I noticed that the doors were wide open and the smell coming from inside was most awful, it left me quite taken aback.

“People were saying how bad it was and when I got inside I was quite concerned with the condition they were in, it was really awful and not at all inviting.”

She added: “The toilets will be used by dozens of people a day especially with the close proximity to the bus station as I imagine it the first port of call for many, so we need to create a good impression for visitors.

“With the way they are at the moment, I am not sure that would be the case.”

Mrs Jakeway added: “I hope the council will do something to improve the toilets because they are not at all pleasant at the moment and everything inside is made of steel which doesn’t seem to make it any more pleasant.

“I do hope that improvements can be made, but saying that most other toilets aren’t much better.”

Gary Farmer, Shrewsbury Town Council’s operations manager, said the council had not had a complaint lodged, but would be looking into the matter.

He said: “We have not received a complaint from Mrs Jakeway or indeed anybody else about a smell or condition the toilets were in at the weekend.

“However, it is something we will investigate as the town council is constantly ensuring the standard of the public toilets we oversee.”
