Emstrey Crematorium

Letter: On February 13 we visited Shrewsbury crematorium to take flowers to commemorate my late mum’s birthday.

To say we were disgusted with the state of things is an understatement.

We have gone to the crematorium many times over the past 27 years and we have never seen it in such a mess before.

The walled area, next to the car park, where you put your flowers is particularly bad.

The flower vases, which all need replacing, were filled with foul smelling water and leaves.

And the area you put the vases in is also filled with rotting leaves and smells disgusting.

My husband tried to clear it out but the smell was to much and beat him.

Even the paths were covered with leaves and the remains of the Christmas tributes.

We decided to look around and it soon became apparent that the new section is being kept tidier than the old.

Considering a lot of elderly and disabled people visit the old section you would think, on safety grounds alone, the mess would be cleared up with more urgency.

I know that the usual excuse will be lack of funding, even though we pay for the plaques to be there.

They could ask for volunteers to help or even get those on community service to do it as it is a community area.

I was always taught to respect the dead and their resting place, but I am extremely upset and embarrassed that this is my parents’ final resting place .

If I could move them I would as they deserved better than this.
