Hundreds oppose plans for new store
Tuesday 23rd February 2010, 11:02AM GMT.

Objections to Oswestry’s proposed new supermarket came in at the rate of one a minute during a protest on Saturday, campaigners claimed today.
A coalition put together to fight the store plans said shoppers queued up to sign letters opposing the plans for a superstore in the town.
The group set up stalls in Festival Square and Bailey Head on Saturday afternoon and 325 people signed objection letters.
Coalition spokesman Mark Evans said: “Most people are convinced that another big superstore will spell the end for the town centre.
“Dozens suggested that local planners should concentrate their efforts on improving the town centre by attracting complementary new businesses.
“There is widespread support for a cinema, but many people want this to be a state-of-the-art and well-run digital cinema that isn’t subsidised by a supermarket for a limited number of years.
“Shoppers from Wrexham or Shrewsbury said that they regularly came to Oswestry because of the bustling town centre, local shops and Saturday market.
“Most voiced the opinion that both Wrexham and Shrewsbury town centres had been ruined by the arrival of superstores, and subsequent closure of independent shops.”
Councillors will meet on March 18 to decide which of the four rival supermarket bids should get the go-ahead.

WOW! 325 signatures!
According to Wikipedia: ‘The 2001 Census recorded the population of the civil parish as 15,613, the urban area as 16,660, and a 2008 estimate suggested that the latter figure had grown to 17,116′
So if we go by the 2008 estimate of 17,116…
1.9% are happy to see people travel to Wrexham or Shrewsbury etc…..
hang on a second….
Thats why they only got 325 signatures, everyone was shopping in Wrexham or Shrewsbury! Where they have more of a choice!
I SUPPORT THE DEVLOPMENT OF A NEW SUPERSTORE TO HELP BRING PEOPLE BACK TO THE TOWN!!!

The claim that 30% of local people from the town’s core catchment population do not shop in Oswestry is a myth. The Council’s advisers Nathaniel Lichfield and Partners (NLP) now think only 17% of the core catchment population do not shop in Oswestry. For Oswestry itself, they think only 10% do not do their main grocery shopping in town, which apparently is not unusual.
