County’s £4m affordable homes boost

Tuesday 23rd February 2010, 6:00PM GMT.

Shropshire has been awarded £4 million to build about 100 affordable homes for sale and rent, Housing Minister John Healey announced today.

Some £3.4 million will help pay for 48 homes to rent and 13 to buy in the Telford & Wrekin area. And South Shropshire Housing Association will receive £483,000 to fund seven social rented homes in Ditton Priors, near Bridgnorth.

The schemes are part of a £500 million cash boost unveiled by Mr Healey to build 8,000 affordable homes across the UK.

More than 3,000 of these are expected to be available through the Government’s HomeBuy schemes, offering first-time buyers a helping hand onto the property ladder. And almost 5,000 homes will be available for affordable rent through housing associations.

Mr Healey said: “Today’s investment in more affordable housing takes total Government help for house building to £3.3 billion since June.”
