Assistant manager Larry Chambers has hailed the impact of forward Steve Thompson – after seeing striker Andy Brown become AFC Telford United’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Brown netted from the penalty spot in Saturday’s 3-0 victory at Harrogate Town, taking his overall club tally to 34 – one clear of £5,000 record signing Lee Moore.

But it is Thompson, an October signing from Port Vale, who has made the biggest impact in recent weeks, playing just behind the front two.

He played a key role in two of the goals on Saturday as the Bucks climbed to sixth in the Blue Square North, just one point off the play-off places.

“Those were the sorts of games we were drawing earlier in the season because we weren’t taking our chances but, for whatever reason, we are now,” said Chambers, whose side have scored 18 from their last five games.

“Browny’s on a bit of a roll, Reeves is scoring goals and Thommo (Steve Thompson) is creating.

“The way we’re playing at the moment, with Thommo getting on the ball, is working and it’s suiting him.

“He’s settled into that role and he’s showing what he’s all about. We knew he was a good player but he’s taken a while to show the quality footballer he is.”

The Bucks go to Northwich Victoria tomorrow evening and Blyth Spartans on Saturday, with Chambers insisting those two games are pivotal. “It’s a defining week in our season with three away games, and it presents a difficult challenge,” he said.

The Telford No 2 also admits new faces may arrive in the coming weeks, though his priority is holding on to Barrow defender Adam Dugdale.
