Thank Heaven for Andy

Andy Brown in actionIn a season low on goals Telford fans must thank their lucky stars they boast Andy Brown in the squad.

The forward netted his 13th of the season in the 3-0 win at Harrogate on Saturday, a strike which took him to the top of the AFC Telford United all-time goalscorers list.

It was Lee Moore’s record which Brown surpassed with his 34th club strike in Yorkshire – his fifth goal in as many matches.

And that strike rate could be crucial as the Bucks try to claw their way into the play off places.

With Damian Reeves and Danny Carey-Bertram also among the goals in recent weeks, Telford have plundered 18 in their last five Blue Square North games.

The 18 goals accumulated in league action before the recent frenzy stretch all the way back to the second strike against Hinckley United in August when, you guessed it, Brown found the net.

Put simply, in the past five league matches the Bucks have scored as many goals as they managed in the previous 21.

Brown’s contributed 10 league goals in total from his 24 league appearances. An impressive record even before you take into the matches he’s started when not 100 per cent fit.

If he had stayed injury-free all season, and been playing in a more successful Telford side, I would wager that goals tally would be twice as high.

Having watched Brown at close quarters this season he reminds me of Carlos Tevez. And while comparing the 23-year-old to the Argentinean who commanded a transfer fee of more than £30 million eight months ago might alert the hyperbole police, it does have some merit.

Like Tevez, Brown will run his socks off for the team. In the bleak autumn months when watching Telford become almost a chore, it was seeing Brown continue to hassle the opposition defence, continue to put in 110 per cent, and, despite limited chances, continue to find the net when all around him were losing their finishing touch, which made the Saturday afternoon trips to the Bucks Head worthwhile.

And all this without playing with a regular strike partner.

With Danny Carey-Bertram, perhaps the club’s most natural finisher, being out of form for the majority of the season, by my count Brown has played with no fewer than seven strikers this term.

That statistic, almost inevitable given the number of players to have donned a shirt for the Bucks this term, further illustrates the achievement of Brown’s goals.

And long may it continue.

A few more against Northwich Victoria on Tuesday night and Blyth Spartans on Saturday would do nicely for starters.
