New jobs hope as land to be sold

A prime Shrewsbury site is to be put on the market next month and is already creating interest amid hopes it could be developed to provide much-needed jobs for the town.
Land next to the Harlescott park and ride is to be put up for sale by Shropshire Council.
The site, which is about seven acres, is believed to be worth about £5 million and has been rumoured to be going on the market for several months.
Today the authority confirmed its intentions for the site, part of which already has planning permission for a new bus depot for Arriva.
Andrew Stirling, head of property services at Shropshire Council, said: “It will be sold with a development brief, and prospective developers would be required to obtain planning permission for their specific use.”
Peter Bettis, chairman of Shrewsbury Business Chamber, said he was interested to see what would take place on the site and he hoped it would create more jobs.
Meanwhile, work on the new Tesco supermarket in a Telford town is nearing completion, with builders estimating it could be ready to open in March.
The new store at Madeley is part of a larger project that includes a new road and alterations to the Maddocks and Parkway Junction.
Steve Newell, project manager for Bowmer & Kirkland, said the road works would be completed by the store opening date of March 22.
