Officer faces court over assault claim

Friday 19th February 2010, 11:44AM GMT.

A policeman is to appear in court after being accused of assaulting a man while he was on duty in Telford.

The officer, who has not been named, has been moved to non-operational duties while he awaits the court appearance.

West Mercia Police confirmed the officer had been summoned to appear before magistrates and taken off front-line duty.

Force spokeswoman Rachel Anstee said: “We can confirm that a police officer has been accused of assaulting a man while on duty in Telford on April 18, 2009.

“He is due to answer a court summons at a magistrates court where he will face charges.

“Until then the officer in question has been moved to non-operational duties.

“Because of legal proceedings, we cannot comment further on this case at this time.”

When an officer is the subject of a complaint, the matter is referred to the Professional Standards Department at headquarters.

They will look at the allegation and decide what course of action to take.
