Cureton in squad for Bury
Thursday 18th February 2010, 1:29PM GMT.
Shrewsbury Town’s new recruit Jamie Cureton will be thrown straight into the squad for tomorrow night’s top-of-the-table clash at Bury.
Manager Paul Simpson was today remaining tight-lipped over whether the prolific marksman will start, but confirmed the striker will be part of the travelling party to Gigg Lane.
Cureton completed a loan switch from Norwich for the remainder of the season late yesterday afternoon.
And the 34-year-old immediately revealed his predatory instincts by scoring in last night’s 3-0 reserve team victory at Burton, where he played 55 minutes.
Cureton has scored 204 goals in 446 starts throughout a 17-year-career which has seen him have two spells at Norwich as well as stints at Bournemouth, Bristol Rovers, Reading, QPR, Swindon, Colchester and Barnsley.
“I’m delighted we have managed to get Jamie in and he has got a fantastic goal-scoring record.
“He’s a real poacher who can score wonder goals as well as tap-ins,” said Simpson
“I’m hoping he will add to what we have already got with Dave Hibbert doing as well as he is, Jake Robinson looking sharp and Kris Bright working extremely hard and pushing on.”
Cureton has not been involved in the Norwich first-team since November, with former Town favourite Grant Holt amongst the strikers limiting his opportunity.
“It’s funny how it works out because Grant going to Norwich and doing so well has enabled us to bring Jamie in,” added the Town boss.
“I spoke to Holty about Jamie and he has given him a glowing reference.
“He is a player we tried to bring in right at the start of January so I’m pleased to get it wrapped up.”
Last night’s trip to Burton also saw Dutch winger Benjamin dan den Broek make his first appearance in blue-and-amber, with Simpson adding: “He did well, got stronger as it went on.”
Dean Holden also reported no problems after his first outing in three weeks following a hamstring problem.
- Northampton and Aldershot have been charged with failing to control their players by the FA following their ill-tempered League Two clash at Sixfields last Friday.
