An Oswestry man had a lucky escape after a fire broke out at his flat while he was asleep.

The fire started in the kitchen of his flat in Middleton Road at 12.26pm yesterday.

No-one was injured in the fire but the resident had to be treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters said the man had been very lucky someone has spotted smoke coming from the second floor flat.

Two appliances from Oswestry, one appliance from Chirk and an incident commander from Shrewsbury attended the scene.

Firefighters said the fire involved a second floor flat but it was very small and luckily caused very minor damage.

Spokesman Adrian Bo- wen said the man had been asleep in one room, unaware that there was a fire in the kitchen.

“We were alerted by a mobile phone after someone noticed smoke coming from the flat.

“The man was very, very lucky indeed that the smoke was spotted so quickly.

“It could have been a far more serious incident.”

He said others living in the flats were not affected.

“He had to be walked to safety by firefighters. He was not injured but was treated for smoke inhalation.”

It is believed the fire was started by a tea towel, which had been left on the cooker.
