Carter hails his ‘gamble’ success
Wednesday 17th February 2010, 12:51PM GMT.
AFC Telford United chairman Lee Carter has paid tribute to management duo Rob Smith and Larry Chambers for making their “gamble” appointment a success.
The duo celebrated their fourth anniversary at the New Bucks Head yesterday during which time they have earned a promotion and twice reached the play-offs in Blue Square North.
They have also enjoyed success in knockout football having won the Setanta Shield, twice reached the FA Cup first round and come within a whisker of Wembley by guiding their team to the FA Trophy semi-finals.
And Carter is delighted the duo have reached a new landmark.
“On a personal level, I’m delighted for Rob and Larry,” said Carter.
“It was a bit of a gamble to appoint them when we had two other managers on the short list with proven track records in Peter Davenport and Chris Brindley and, in Davenport’s case, a big name.
“There have been some tough moments for everyone but we have had a lot of success over the last four years and, for the large part, it’s been a blast.”
Meanwhile, Telford remain just three points off the play-off pace after the latest round of Blue Square North matches last night.
Alfreton moved up two places from sixth to fourth with a 2-0 victory over Workington, but Eastwood’s home defeat to leaders Fleetwood ensured the Bucks remain in contention for a top five finish.
Telford are currently three points behind Droylsden in the last play-off position, although they have played two games more.
