Blog: An example to his players

With all the talk about captains recently it is refreshing to see the attitude of Telford’s skipper, writes blogger Alex James.
Stuart Whitehead has found himself out of the team in recent weeks. But he hasn’t moaned and groaned, he has continued to be the ultimate professional and, as far as we know, he hasn’t been anywhere near Wayne Bridge’s ex-girlfriend.
Boss Rob Smith described how hard it has been to leave his trusty lieutenant out of the squad. The form of loan signing Adam Dugdale and centre half partner Shane Killock has meant Whitehead has had to get used to a place on the bench.
It now looks as though Sean Newton’s injury may open the door for him to return to the side – as he did midway though the second half on Saturday.
And the skipper entered the fray, quickly settled into the flow of the game, won every header, committed himself to every tackle and encouraged his team mates to do everything in their power to protect Telford’s advantage.
The game was won, the points were in the bag and yet Whitehead still refused to relinquish that clean sheet.
It was something Smith alluded to when speaking about his skipper after the game. The clean sheet was the Bucks’ first of 2010 and Whitehead will be hoping for many more as Telford attempt to break into the top five.
That objective is starting to look more and more likely with every match played. Finally Telford are starting to string results together. While the Redditch game will fail to live long in the memory, the Bucks were professional to the last and comfortably saw off their opponents.
And with Damien Reeves hitting a double he became the latest striker to finally find his shooting boots in a season which has been low on goals.
Telford’s ultimate goal of promotion is very much alive ahead of a tricky trio of away fixtures.
Emerge from those with the unbeaten run still intact and we can enter March with plenty to fight for.
