Tea room no winner with foodie Michael
Tuesday 16th February 2010, 10:54AM GMT.
Celebrity food critic Michael Winner has criticised the standard of food at a tea room and restaurant in Shrewsbury.
The 74-year-old former film director carried out a review of Poppy’s Tea Rooms and Restaurant in Milk Street.
Despite applauding the character of the business’s owner Geoff Meredith, Mr Winner claimed the standard of food was poor.
“This restaurant is very good for the diet because you can’t eat anything,” he said in the review, which appeared in the Sunday Times.
Mr Meredith said he was “flabbergasted” by the review as he said Mr Winner had appeared to be enjoying himself during his visit to the restaurant in October while carrying out filming for a new TV show.
He also disputed the claims about the standard of food and said they were committed to delivering high quality dishes.
Mr Winner dined at Poppy’s with his assistant and hairdresser Dinah and make-up lady Joan Hills.
He ordered chicken breast and quiche so he could “test” both meals.
Referring to the dish in his review, he says: “The quiche was beyond belief awful. The base managed to be soggy and hard at the same time. Joan said her organic panini was hard, too.
“Dinah said ‘Even my eggs taste funny and I’m hungry. I’m going to buy a bag of sweets or a chocolate bar’.”
But despite his view on Poppy’s, Mr Winner did have some kind words for Shrewsbury as a town.
“I’m very big in Shrewsbury,” he said.
“It was the only place where we filmed me grabbing shoppers on the street for my TV show Michael Winner’s Dining Stars and had to move on again and again because crowds of people kept asking for my autograph and following us. Very intelligent people in Shrewsbury. Know a bit of class when they see it.”
But Mr Meredith said he had failed to see the funny side, adding: “I was very surprised. We were laughing and joking the whole time he was here. His party were the only ones to complain out of 120 meals that day.
“If he had a stressful day I don’t see why I should be taken out in it. I have been here 10 years and never had a complaint like that before.”

Well he said what he thought that is the point of a critic, now they can improve

Calm down dear, he’s only a B-Movie director.

I’ve never been to the restaurant in question and not even read the article, but what exactly qualifies mr Winner as someone that can post his “professional” review in the Sunday times? Has he actually received any training in this art?

I have to say MW’s review is one of my sunday morning treats. If he was an MW column regular I think Geoff would have unplugged the microwave as soon as the gang entered. Big mistake. If you read the review promising 8 minutes to produce that order was never going to happen.

B-Movie director? Death Wish is a classic!

The comments are as irrelevant as the Stars own reporters reviews of eateries, who are they to tell us what we do and don’t like.
I went recently to The Falcon in Hinstock which got a right slating from someone at Ketley, the food and staff were top notch which throws into doubt their ability to judge, and in consequence put peoples livelyhoods at risk.

I love Poppies, so at the end of it all who cares what Mr Winner says. If I went to some top notch London eatery, who’s to say I would like the food there, does not make it bad, just perhaps not to my taste.

Andy, even Mr Winner would I guess acknowledge Death Wish as a B-Movie, a classic B-Movie perhaps (& up for debate) but definately of the B variety.
Quinny, has he received any training – not wishing to generalise, but looking at him I’d say he was self-taught (often, well and in large lessons)

my husband and i have visited this restaurant and enjoyed it with toast and tea/coffee and a fully cooked breakfast

Perhaps Mr Winner was in the wrong establishment? It certainly did not describe the Poppy’s my wife and our friends know and love.

Dear Michael,
Based on your comments you would assume that Poppy’s was constantly empty, however, every Saturday is packed throughout the day with customers having to be turned away. I know this from personal experience. Very strange this seeing as, in your opinion, the food is beyond belief awful. I may also comment that many of these customers are regulars and have been heard to remark that Poppy’s serve the “best breakfast in Shrewsbury”, “best cakes” and some say its the best meal they have had in years.
The restaurant is full on weekdays with a MIXTURE of clientèle who will all be very pleased with your opinion that they are of “a very nice class” (?). These range from students looking for a healthy, cheap and fulfilling meal to parents with children looking for variety, which they could not find in other places.
I wonder if it really was worth you doing this article at all. I struggle to understand how your opinion, a pretentious southerner with prejudicial preconceptions, has any connection to the lunch time diners in a small market town.
Also, if every person who dined with you in the restaurant is actually employed by you it makes sense that they would rather agree with you over the food than not.
I wait with baited breath for your next review in which you make your mind up, again, before tasting any food.

“He dined with his hairdresser and makeup lady”! Why on earth does he need a hairdresser and makeup lady in tow?

I have always been more than satisfied with the food and service at Poppy’s, reading Michael Winner’s comments about himself he was obviously too full of himself to enjoy the food. He is famous for the Death Wish Films which were in the 70s and an insurance advert, so what makes him an expert,

someone remind this old buffer the difference between black magic and black pudding!!

“I’m very big in Shrewsbury,” that just about sums up all we need to know about the old windbag

Michael Winner should remember the old adage “never insult someone who serves your food”.

I have lived in Greece for 8 years and on my last visit to the UK in October last year I went to Poppy’s for a mid-day meal. I was most impressed with everything about the place, the food especially so to the management I would say, ignore what Michael said, he is too full of his own importance to take any notice of. Given his lifestyle he probably thinks that any meal costing less than the national debt is not worthy of him. He is after all a legend in his own lunch box. IGNORE.

I am a big tea shop fan and visited Poppies via recommendation. I have to say I was very disappointed indeed and in fact did not enjoy my food either and remember that the cup was chipped. I can’t remember all the reasons why as it was a while ago. I wasn’t impressed, and thought I would not go back. Sorry, but this is was my experience. I don’t rate this guy I find can’t watch him on the box at all,but I did agree with his comment.
