The multi-platinum-selling Fron Male Voice Choir has unveiled its new music director.

Leigh Mason has been appointed to the position with the famous award-winning choir, which has many members from the Oswestry area.

Currently living in Buckley in Flintshire, Leigh teaches at Helsby High School, having graduated from University of Wales at Bangor. She was a founder member of Chester primary schools choir and a founder member of Flintshire Youth Choir and this led to further choral opportunities including membership of Four Counties Youth Choir, the National Youth Choir and the multi award-winning Sirenian singers.

The new music director said she was “very excited” at the prospect of working with the Fron choir and the choir members said they are also delighted to welcome her into the fold.

They said they were happy to have made the appointment after searching for somebody for a number of months.

The search was sparked by the departure of Anne Atkinson who left the award-winning choir to pursue her solo projects.

Choir press liaison officer David Jones said: “It was important to get somebody who we know will get on well with the choir and has the enthusiasm for the position.”

The choir has another busy year ahead, with its next performance at Mold’s St Mary’s Church on February 27.

The group is also hoping to win a Classical Brit Award for its album Voices Of The Valley: Memory Lane. The choir finds itself in competition with Pope Benedict XVI, who received his first Classical Brit nomination for Music From The Vatican.

And the choir is also up against names from some of Britain’s biggest television series. Other nominees include X Factor’s Rhydian Roberts, from Powys, Britain’s Got Talent star Faryl Smith and the winner of Last Choir Standing, Only Men Aloud.
