Fight over bid to shut schools

Tuesday 16th February 2010, 12:48PM GMT.

Classroom topStaff, parents and governors from closure-threatened schools in Powys have banded together to fight for their future.

A campaign group to fight education cuts in the region has been relaunched calling on Powys County Council to find a solution which does not involve the closure of any secondary school or sixth form.

The relaunch of Powys Against Cuts in Education comes after a leaked report suggested a radical revamp of secondary education in Powys.

The proposals could see secondary schools in Llanidloes, Gwernyfed, Crickhowell, Llanfyllin or Llanfair Caereinion and Llandrindod Wells or Builth Wells closed.

Sixth forms at every school across the county could also be shut with pupils being sent to the three Coleg Powys sites.

The group has been set up by the National Union of Teachers. The teaching union has already called for an urgent meeting with Powys County Council.

A spokesman for Pace said: “We have decided to re-launch the campaign group PACE to help fight against these proposals. The group will act as a representative and one voice for all the schools which are being affected.”
