Town hit by two power cuts in seven hours

Monday 15th February 2010, 11:06AM GMT.

Thousands of people were left without power after an area of Shrewsbury was hit by two blackouts in seven hours. The first power cut happened just before 1.30pm yesterday and hit about 2,200 properties in the Belle Vue area.

A spokesman for Central Networks today said the blackout was caused by a fault in a high voltage underground cable.

Most people were without power for about 45 minutes, although some were affected for several hours.

Later that evening 1,900 people were left without power for a second time because the circuit which they had been switched to following the first shortage failed to hold.

A spokesman for Central Networks said: “It started at 1.29pm and it affected 2,200 customers who appeared to be in the Belle Vue area of Shrewsbury.

“We got the majority of them back on by 2.10pm and the restoration of the final 200 or so was at 4pm.

“We switched people onto a different circuit but then lost 1,900 customers at 8.30pm. We got the vast majority of 1,800 of them back on by 8.55pm and everybody else back on by 9.10pm.”

The spokesman said engineers had now fixed the problem and everything appeared to be back to normal today. He said: “It basically seems as though one of the big switches didn’t hold. We would just like to apologise to everyone who was affected.”

I was one of them. So whats the spoilt roast sunday dinner compensation line number? Ok joking. But apparently we are in for more of this as our power station building programme falls behind in 5 years time. Very much like the immigration swathe was forecast 10 years ago.
