Further arrest on serious assault
Saturday 13th February 2010, 11:10AM GMT.
A further arrest has been made in connection with an assault in a Shropshire town centre which left a man seriously injured, police said today.
Three men have now been arrested following the incident which happened in Queen Street, Market Drayton. The injured man, who is in his late-20s, is critical but stable in the North Staffs University Hospital, Stoke.
A team of officers is continuing to investigate the incident which happened on Tuesday and a new appeal was issued today for witnesses to come forward.
Detective Inspector Mick Homden said: “This is a serious incident and we need everyone who witnessed any part of what happened, to come forward as a matter of urgency.”
He said several people had been in touch but believed there were others who had yet to make contact.
He said: “It is absolutely vital they contact Shrewsbury police station on 0300 333 3000 without delay.
“This incident happened in daylight at around 4pm on Tuesday near the Fruit and Shake cafe.
“It was a busy time of day with a steady stream of passers-by. If people saw any part of this disturbance . . . it is still important they call the police.”
Two men who were arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of assault, were later released on police bail pending further inquiries.
DI Homden said a third man was arrested yesterday and remained in custody at Shrewsbury.
