Traders set to hold talks over crime spree

Friday 12th February 2010, 1:03PM GMT.

whitchurchWorried traders in Whitchurch whose businesses are being targeted by burglars and vandals are to hold talks with police in a bid to tackle a recent spate of break-ins and criminal damage.

Whitchurch Chamber of Trade and Commerce has invited police to its next meeting.

It comes in the wake of a recent wrecking spree in which shop windows were damaged across the town.

And in the last week, police have launched investigations into a ram-raid at Griffiths Tool Hire in Bridgewater Street and a break-in at Pets 2000 in High Street.

In the raid, which happened between 7pm and 8pm on Saturday, £12,000 of stock, including expensive tools was taken.

Shop staff said it appears those responsible, possibly using a vehicle, rammed into a side wall, which has since been repaired, to gain entry.

At Pets 2000, between 4.45pm on Sunday and 8.15am on Monday, thieves smashed their way in and stole confectionery, toiletries and other items worth about £400.

Linda Bate, chairman of the chamber, said today: “We have invited police to come along and they have agreed to attend.

“Our members are concerned about the break-ins and broken windows.

“Many traders are not happy because it’s bound to be costing them lots of money.

“When it comes to claiming on their insurance for fixing broken windows many don’t bother because of their excesses or because they want to keep their premiums down.”

The meeting is to take place on February 24 at the Dodington Lodge Hotel.

Anyone who has any information should contact Whitchurch police station on 03003 333000.

Prepare for a short term push by the police to tryto plug the hole for a while and then watch the patrols drop off and the situation return to awful. That will continue for a while before yet another group or indiivdual loses patience and publicises the situation sufficiently for something to be done again. In other words , one month good, 9 months bad,one month good , 9 months badetc etc.
