Letter: How to settle our debts
Friday 12th February 2010, 7:30AM GMT.

Letter: Many people ask why we donate £50 million to the relief of Haiti when we cannot even look after those at home.
Personally, I think that the money should go to Haiti, but I have a plan.
If greedy politicians and council members gave up at least half of their perks and allowances, this country could well afford to give Haiti all that it needs and solve the poverty crisis in this land.
Sometimes I think that Guy Fawkes had the right idea.
It might be just what they need to realise that the people of this country have lost all faith in the Government.
I would rather live in Haiti. At least they have a national identity.
Ours is constantly being surrendered by a weak, ill-minded government, or we could get RBS to stump up the cash.
We own 85 per cent of it, yet they still lend money to a US company to buy out a British one, thus threatening British jobs.
The Government stands by while we get eaten up and spat out by a Europe working against us.
We’ve become second class citizens – a nation of hard-working, struggling, fed up people with no identity or soul.
I can hardly imagine Emperor Sarkozy or Empress Merkel will understand.
After all, they are the real rulers of this land, not our weak and feeble government.

I have never read such a load of rubbish in my life.
I now live in the US and believe me banking is exactly the same over here. Banking and international business is beyond the average man and is intertwined with government intervention.
Reference Haiti. It has no identity. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, which has only come to light to most of us through the recent earthquake. the reason this country is so poor is because it’s an extension of Africa a continent where people are scared stiff of a hard days work and where corruption in government is rife.
We the west will pour money into this country and in 10 yrs time it will be exactly the same as it is today.
Instead of just pouring money into 3rd world countries like Haiti. The west should make these countries accountable for the money thats given them. They should have to prove they are building a self supporting infrastructure

I agree very much with Brian. We are just a couple of islands away from Haiti in the Caribbean. Haiti is extremely poor and I am amazed by the first line of the letter. The reason that support should be given to Haiti when insufficient is being done for people in the UK is quite simple. People in the UK have not just been buried by a 7.2 grade earthquake. At least 100,000 people have not just been killed. 300,000 more have not been injured.
Over a million have not just been made homeless.
It is true that corruption is endemic on the island however it is also true that aid agencies are bringing food and not simply giving money. If people want to help the people of Haiti they should give the money to reputable charities that do good work. The red cross of America is ideal because it is close and has good knowledge of the area and the problems it will face. In addition the criticisms and outrages of Haitian politicians will hopefully be treated for what they mostly are, – a deleiberate attempt to have aid money placed in their hands. It must not happen.
Here on St Maarten Haitians are recognised as being workers who are able to work physically hard during the day. They are often labourers, construction workers or cleaners and do tough jobs. Their lack of education should not be confused with stupidity but often is.

Poor Haiti. If only it had oil, or weapons of mass destruction, America and it’s poodles would be there in strength. As for Brian’s comment about corrupt governments, have you missed all the coverage about our own government recently?

Duncan,
You seem to be a little confused in your interpretation of the sort of protections that might be in place for takeovers such as the Kraft/cadbury one, and the role of Europe in these.
In fact, in France or Germany, such a takeover could not have happened. It is only because we have watered down possible European legislation in our local implementation of it, largely due to the views of Euro-sceptics, that we do not have such protection here.
Of course, the other side to the coin is that if we did have such laws in place, they would limit the acquisitions of non-European comapanies by British ones, of which at one time there were a lot. So it’s swings and roundabouts really.
Brian, as for Africa being a continent where ‘people are scared stiff of a day’s work’, I suggest you put that to the many Africans who have to walk miles everyday just to find food or clean water. What an astonishingly ill-researched and vindictive comment.

Brian, … what you say is perfectly true! .. pouring money into Haiti is like giving a Donkey Strawberries! …. but the same can be said for EU countries! .. witness fiscal problems with PIIGS! .. countries that fake statistics to gain admittance and credibility and break the rules that are put in place to ensure responsibilty. Haiti is one of those places that unfortunately will never have a self sustaining economy unless it reverts back to it’s historic past and becomes a slave state run by the Global Elite

I am confused over the Haiti situation. OK the loss of life etc. was terrible but can someone explain where the British government got the money from? Cash for hospitals, schools, emergency services in the UK have been butchered by succesive administrations over the years yet as if by magic money is no object. The UK has people sleeping on the streets, yes, some by choice, but many with no option, where is their help?. I believe we should put our own house in order before we too become yet another charity case.

Re: John Howard. It has got oil and minerals and a 10,000 strong US Army decamped there pretty smartish. Join the dots folks.

Haiti has been crippled by the debt it was forced to pay in order for France to grant it independence. Corruption and poor governance haven’t helped but Haiti is poor not because of the laziness of its citizens but because of the greed of France and the indifference of other countries. It cannot get out of debt because the debt and the interest charged on it are more than the Haitian economy can cope with. David and some of the other contributors should be quite ashamed of their selfish and uncaring attitudes.
