Leaflets move in battle on store bid

Friday 12th February 2010, 8:00PM GMT.

Oswestry aerial shotCampaigners are to deliver leaflets to 7,500 Oswestry homes urging people to oppose supermarket plans.

The mass mail drop was revealed today by campaign group Oswestry 21 which said the town’s chamber of trade had joined its coalition against the store plans.

The thousands of leaflets will be delivered to homes in the Oswestry area by Royal Mail on behalf of the group starting February 22.

The leaflets will give information about the four rival supermarket bids for Oswestry.

Part of the leaflet is an objection letter against the store plans.

Householders will be urged to tear off the objection letter, sign it, and send it to Shropshire Council planning chiefs.

An anti-supermarket poster campaign will also be launched next week and a public meeting is also being organised.

Oswestry 21 members say the town does not need a new store and it would harm existing town centre traders.

Their argument has been supported by Oswestry Chamber of Trade which has joined a coalition of groups running a Keep Our Town Special campaign.

Chairman Yossi Gliksman said that overwhelming support from traders to join Oswestry 21, Oswestry Civic Society and Campaign to Protect Rural England in campaigning against any other supermarkets being built in Oswestry had prompted the move.

So Os21 thinks that planning is all matter of public opinion? No – it’s a matter of law!

If Shropshire Council decided in a fit of collective madness, against all further supermarket development in Oswestry, the only result would be an immediate appeal by one or all 4 developers.

I expect that any planning Inspector would immediately decide that the council had acted undreasonably – because it would have – and award costs – which in this case could run into 5 figures, against the Council.

Is Os21 prepared to pay that? Fancy the cost of any appeal added to your Council Tax bill?

As to the Chamber of Commerce – perhaps the Chair could tell us what exactly that body is doing to attract custom to the town?

I seem to remember that it was only 12 months ago that he was quoted as saying that the Chamber supported the idea of a supermarket on the Central Car Park. So what has changed?

Of the two main applications The Smithfield site will bring the better benefit in terms of cinema, office accommodation, parking, dentist and cinema, AND protects the future of the Cattlemarket, while Burbridges would assist the company to relocate – hopefully somewhere locally.

The same cries of “we don’t need a supermarket” were heard when Somefield came to Oswestry, and when Sainsbury’s came to Oswestry. (And does anyone remember that the then Borough Council wanted that to be built at Mile End?)

Oswestry – you cannot put the clock back – you can only move forward – you may not like it but another supermarket WILL come to Oswestry, the only question is – where?
