Officer’s warning to fans at football
Thursday 11th February 2010, 6:00PM GMT.
More than 50 police officers will be on duty for Shrewsbury Town FC’s big derby match with Hereford Utd on Saturday.
The fixture will attract one of the biggest crowds of the season at the Prostar Stadium and police say they are anxious that fans are able to enjoy the occasion without incident.
Chief Inspector Martin Whitelegg said: “It’s a ticket-only match for Hereford supporters and they will need to purchase tickets before the day of the game. If you haven’t got a ticket, please don’t come to the match as you will be turned away.”
He said there would be a “substantial policing operation” to ensure genuine supporters from both sides could enjoy the game in safety without interference.
“There is no recent history of disorder but there will be a strong policing presence to deal with anyone who does cause problems,” he said.
“Officers will deal robustly with any individuals who commit public order offences. We are working closely with British Transport Police and also our West Mercia colleagues in Herefordshire. A number of police officers from Hereford who are aware of known troublemakers will be attending the match to act as spotters. Anyone who has caused previous problems will be well known to them.”
Mr Whitelegg said Hereford supporters should check the Shrewsbury Town website for information about travel and parking.
