Letter: Fresh look at charity?
Thursday 11th February 2010, 7:45AM GMT.

Letter: I suppose one should not be too surprised when the suggestion that the maxim charity begins at home, when applied to Haiti generates such antagonism in your letters column. But I am beginning to think the whole business of charity needs to be examined.
Not a day passes that the postman fails to deliver a begging letter in some form or another. Every evening on TV there is inevitably a very cleverly composed emotionally charged appeal to my generosity.
Now I’m sure that I will be told that the appeals don’t end because the poverty doesn’t end. But then the question is why?
Charities and governments have been pouring our generosity into Africa. Where has the money gone and why is there no improvement? Is it not time to set targets and, for want of a better phrase, pay by results?
It may not be the best idea since sliced bread, but it is an idea.
We’ve got to do something as, with our present financial situation, we can not continue as we are. I think that may be the point your earlier correspondent was making.

The whole question of charity does need looking at, but probably not on a racial basis. “Unattractive” charities get very little funding while the RNLI and the cancer charities are flush. Last year a charity supporting street workers had 30 places for the Bristol marathon they couldn’t even give away.
Also, much of all the cycling and skydiving barely covers the cost of the event. It’s largely just a way of funding a nice day out for the participants.
Much charity to the 3rd world isn’t even intended to end poverty. The best thing that’s happened to Haiti is the cancellation of their huge debt. No charity was raising money to put that off.

I would add that various charities see fit to buy plastic bags and pay for someone to puch them through our letterboxes so that we can donate shoes and clothing. This is an expensive waste of their income as I certainly can only make these kind of donations once a year – I have thrown out two bags that were delivered this week!!

True, Charity begins at home; Mind you, only those who deliberately chose to misread it omit to notice that charity shouldn’t end there too.
“We’re here to help each other get through this thing, whatever it is.”

Get involved and try to change things if you feel so strongly – otherwise your all like the saying about emplty vessels who make the most noise.
Least if you fail you can at least say you tried.

This is a difficult subject since , whilst many charities are worthwhile [ such as donkey sanctuaries etc ], it is impossible, unless one is extremely wealthy, to support them all or even most of them ,a government effort is clearly being made to clamp down on sham charities by introducing a “public benefit” clause although at the moment this only applies to new applicants for charitable status.
My suggestion to anyone in doubt would be to chose the chaity [ or charities ] that you know to be doing a good job and , generally , stick to them,my own favourite is Water Aid since every human being on earth deserves at the very least a drink of clean water.

I’ve set up direct debit payments for several charities over the years. A few years ago I was forced (short term financial reasons) to stop giving to a few of the higher profile charities.
What really annoys me now is that these charities directly mail me every month or so (with a free pen – that never works!) asking me to start giving money again. All I can see is all the money I originally gave in good faith is being wasted on sending me this rubbish – They try to make me feel guilty, but it just makes me more determined not to give any more to them.
I will only give to my selected lower profile charities now.
@Spartacus: Don’t get me onto the subject of plastic collection bags for clothes. Where I live in Telford, I often get 1 or 2 put though the letterbox every day, and they just go straight in the bin. How big do these organisations think our wardrobes are?

I had a debate with a family member last week – he thinks we shouldn’t give any money to Haiti (re the 6 million I think it is our government has pledged) due to the recession, I think we should give what we can. Yes the UK and it’s inhabitants are going through tough times at the moment but can you imagine a world where we abandoned hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women and children to a fate no one could prevent or forsee and was not of their making? I couldn’t live with myself sitting at home, having a cuppa knowing people where buried alive and left to die and no one prepared to help – this is what makes us Great Britain after all, our compassion towards other nations even when our chips are down.

how long can you go on giving? the church–for one
has been obsessed with africa for ever and it aint any different our govt gives trillions in aid
but ask for money for the ongoing inprovement and
rejig of our ageing infrastructure and we get—none no can do–eccept near election time when
all the schemes that have not been touched for 20 years get priority treatment charity should at times—begin at home

Whilst i agree with some anti comments, i sipport most peoples view on giving, no you will not end poverty but you will make a differance, think about that when you are having a cuppa in your warm house with runing water waiting for the doctor to call, watching the t.v.on your day off work.
There is a gap in this world between the fortunate and unfortunate, the level of the needy in their hour of need, and the levels in which you as an individual can give.
select as you will what you want to support and remmember, that is what other people are doing, just making a differance.
