Bridge to shut for £40,000 repairs

Thursday 11th February 2010, 10:27AM GMT.

A south Shropshire bridge will be closed for up to four weeks for an estimated £40,000 of repairs.

Walkmill Bridge, near Wentnor, will be shut from February 22 following accident damage caused in December last year.

The bridge, which carries the Wentnor to Shrewsbury road over the River East Onny, was severely damaged when a vehicle demolished its southern parapet and damaged the walls beneath.

Shropshire Council has said it will be necessary to close the road to traffic to carry out the repairs safely because of the narrow nature of the bridge, on a sharp double bend.

From February 22, the road will be closed from 7.30am until 5pm for up to four weeks. At weekends, the bridge will reopen under traffic light control.

Exemptions to the road closure will be available for school buses.

When the bridge is closed, traffic will be diverted via the A488 road, Bank Farm Drive in Shrewsbury and Longden Road.

Access for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will remain available.

Councillor Martin Taylor-Smith, cabinet member for strategic planning and tran- sport, said: “It is appreciated that the proposed work will cause some inconvenience and every reasonable effort will be made to reopen the road as soon as possible.

“Because the proposed four week closure includes some allowance for bad weather, this may be possible.”
