Review: Pride & Prejudice
Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury

An adaptation of a literary classic entertained audiences in Shrewsbury on Monday night.
Theatre Royal Bath Productions presented Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
The play, adapted by Simon Reade, starred Susan Hampshire. She was fantastic as Mrs Bennet, the mother of the five Bennet daughters, who is keen to see her children married off to secure their wealth.
She was well supported by Peter Ellis, who is familiar to many from TV soap The Bill, as her long-suffering husband. He provided a lot of the humour.
The standout performance was given by Katie Lightfoot, in her professional theatre debut, as Elizabeth Bennet, who convinced as the wisest of the five sisters, who must overcome her prejudice to fall in love with Mr Darcy.
Lydia Bennet was well played by Lydia Larson who captured the headstrong spirit of the youngest child.
The costumes perfectly evoked the period and the minimalist set and quirky props raised a lot of laughs with actors playing everything from clocks to hedges.
The show runs until Saturday and its original interpretation of a favourite tale, is sure to please.
