Olympic aces due in county for talks
Wednesday 10th February 2010, 11:10AM GMT.
Two Olympic gold medallists were expected in Shropshire today for a major conference aimed at stopping sports funding in schools being cut after the London 2012 Games.
Track superstars Denise Lewis and Darren Campbell MBE were due to set foot in the county to pledge their support at the Youth Sport Trust’s two-day sports colleges conference at the International Centre in Telford.
Campbell, who won gold in the 100m relay at the 2004 games in Athens, was expected to arrive at the centre at 11am, while Lewis, who took gold in the heptathlon in 2000 in Sydney, was due at 8pm.
Welcoming the pair to Telford will be Tom Gray, chief executive of the Southwater Event Group, which owns the International Centre. The event is excepted to pull in about 2,000 delegates.
Speaking before her arrival in Telford, Lewis called for more engagement of young people in the run-up to the games.
