Blast victim given bravery award
Wednesday 10th February 2010, 8:51AM GMT.
A victim of the Shrewsbury explosion who helped save the life of his flatmate has been presented with a special bravery award by the town’s mayor.
Despite suffering serious injuries in the blast, Scott Godbold, 23, risked his own life to return to the ruins of his collapsed home to help rescue his flatmate Sam Devine-Turner, 20.
Miss Devine-Turner has said she would probably have died unless her friend had pulled rubble away that was trapping her following the explosion on January 3 at the corner of Bridge Street and Smithfield Road.
On Thursday night Scott and Sam, along with their friend Annie Davies, 19, who was also injured in the incident, attended a special presentation at the Yorkshire House pub.
Scott’s girlfriend Sarah Pearse, 19, who lived at the flat, was unable to attend because she is still in Selly Oak hospital being treated for burns. The Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Alan Townsend, presented Scott with an in-house award from the pub in recognition of his outstanding bravery.
Pub landlord Paul Bailey said everyone was proud of Scott. Mr Bailey added that he was delighted with how well a fundraising gig for those injured in the blast had been. The money raised will help buy new possessions and clothes for the friends who lost everything in the explosion.
