Fears for future of business school
Tuesday 9th February 2010, 11:04AM GMT.
Plans have been drawn up by the University of Wolverhampton to move its business school from the Telford campus.
But fears have been dismissed that the campus at Priorslee, which hosts a number of other facilities, could close because of deep cuts to higher education budgets. The business school is split between Telford and the Compton campus just outside of Wolverhampton.
Professor Ian Oakes, pro vice-chancellor, research and enterprise, said the university had been in consultation for the last six months to “identify options” for relocating the school.
“A proposal to relocate the Telford and Compton operations to the Wolverhampton city campus will go before the university’s board of governors next month,” he said.
“It is proposed that all University of Wolverhampton Business School staff will be accommodated in an existing building on the city campus site.
“There are currently no plans to close the Telford or Compton campuses as there are other operations on both sites.”
The business school has more than 60 teaching staff across the two sites and attracts hundreds of students from more than 20 countries.
The Telford campus was officially opened in 1994 by the Duke of Kent. Other facilities there include the e-Innovation Centre and the School of Engineering and Built Design.
Fears over the future of the campus were raised in a national newspaper report yesterday.
More than 15,000 university posts could be axed over the next few years as a result of budget cuts, a higher education union warned.
The University and College Union was reported as telling a national newspaper the majority of the positions lost would be academic, meanwhile institutions may be forced to ditch courses and close campuses.
It follows the announcement last week of swingeing cuts which will see budgets reduced by £449 million for 2010/11.
