Call for action over web use by criminals

Tuesday 9th February 2010, 7:51AM GMT.

row-of-computersFamilies of violent crime victims are set to meet politicians and Facebook executives this week to urge action over prisoners posting messages online from inside their cells.

Barry Mizen, whose teenage son Jimmy was murdered by Jake Fahri in May 2008, will lead a delegation calling for websites to take down “nasty” material.

He said complaints over postings often “disappeared into cyberspace” instead of prompting their removal.

The family of Ben Kinsella told last month of their outrage at taunts posted on Facebook by his killer, Jade Braithwaite.

Braithwaite, who is serving a life sentence, wrote that he was “down but not out” and posted a mock-up photo of himself wearing a T-shirt which said “Free Jade Braithwaite”.

Mr Mizen, his wife Margaret and Richard Taylor, father of murdered schoolboy Damilola, will attend talks chaired by Justice Secretary Jack Straw tomorrow.

Representatives of Facebook and regulator Ofcom will also attend, a spokesman for the Mizen family said.

“I think social networking and Facebook are great sites but there has to be a degree of monitoring and responsibility – and that lies firmly with the social networking site,” Mr Mizen said.

“They need to regulate themselves or they could end up with Government regulation.”

“If hundreds or thousands of people are complaining you should look at it and take it down.

“After people have been found guilty and put in prison you don’t want them to be able to bully or intimidate you from in prison.”

How the hell are prisoners getting interet access in their cells?

    Beggars belief!

These people are scum, they have no concerns of the feelings of other people which is why most of them are in prison in the first place. The simplest solution is to simply deny them Internet access (but I suppose that would be a breach of their “human rights”)

Funny, really, how the Home office and HMPS keep telling us that tellies and internet are required to be supplied to prisoners under European human rights legislation, but when my son was banged up for a while in another North European (EU member as well) prison not that long ago, they were four to a small cell and no luxuries like that. I had to pay for food to be sent in. Best they could hope for was an out of date magazine with some of the pictures removed before they let us have them.

In UK prisons, prisoners are not allowed telephones, (although that rule doesn’t work very well). One of the reasons is to prevent contact with the outside World to organise things from their cell and another is to prevent intimidation of people. And yet, there seems to be no control over what they can do on the internet. Facebook is a two way system and incorporates a messaging application!

Time to crack down. Take a lead from some budget hotels – put a wave blocker system in prison that prevents mobile communication and put all internet points out of reach. If they need access for “education”, restrict addresses, block proxies and review the IP addresses that they have visited. Any visits to unapproved sites, then take away the privileges and put them in solitary with no visiting rights. When they’re out of solitary, if they want to continue learning, they can learn without internet access just like people did in the “old days”.

I’d also argue that, as in foreign prison systems, it’s time for prisoners in the UK to pay for their meals or have them sent in. These bad boys go to prison and we feed them up and give them gyms to make them fitter and more dangerous.

UK prison system – a nonsense. UK prison system – a soft option. UK prison system – like being on benefits, but even less effort. It simply encourages re-offending and as a consequence, the general public suffer.
