£2m tennis centre plan revealed
Tuesday 9th February 2010, 11:07AM GMT.
Plans for a £2.2 million tennis centre in Telford were revealed today in what could a first of its kind for the town.
Blueprints have been drawn up to create a tennis centre on land at Oakengates Leisure Centre, should planners give it the thumbs up.
The submitted plans include four indoor courts and four all-weather outdoor courts with 10 floodlights for night time play and additional parking.
The complex, in Wrockwardine Wood, already has a 25-metre swimming pool, gym, four full-size pitches, Telford Athletics Stadium and four badminton courts.
Councillor Stephen Burrell, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “A community pay and play indoor tennis centre is one of the key elements of a new strategy to deliver sports facilities in Telford and Wrekin.
“Following backing for the project from the Lawn Tennis Association, the council will now table a plan for the delivery of the project with a view to it opening for school and community use in spring 2011.”
A report on the scheme will be discussed by Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet on February 23.
